Changing Leadership at Clean Production Action

It is bittersweet to announce that Dr. Mark S. Rossi will be stepping down from his role as Executive Director at Clean Production Action (CPA) in Q1 2025.

We are thankful to Mark for leading CPA on this rewarding journey with all of you to transform the toxic chemical economy into one that is healthier for all people and the planet. In his words {file:3906:url}

“After two decades of incredible work at CPA, I am ready for the next chapter of my career in the environmental health movement.”

Mark joined CPA in 2004, first as our Research Director and later as our Executive Director. We are proud of all that he and CPA’s staff have achieved together in those years.

We could have never imagined that the 2007 report he co-authored, The GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals: Evaluating Flame Retardants for TV Enclosures, would be the launch of the international gold standard for chemical hazard assessment – GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals. Today, the rolling up of toxicological endpoint into benchmarks is now the best practice in chemical hazard assessments and chemical Benchmark scores are a common refrain at meetings of chemical safety.

Nor could we have imagined, 10 years later, CPA launching an ecolabel to identify environmentally preferable products with GreenScreen Certified®. Mark led CPA’s bold foray into product certifications, and we now have seven GreenScreen Certified standards with over 250 certified products from manufacturers in China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Taiwan, UK, and USA. GreenScreen Certified for Firefighting Foam, for example, is now the de facto eco-label for fluorine-free foam with over 45 certified products from 15 manufacturers.

Mark led with Tim Greiner of Pure Strategies and Sally Edwards of UMass Lowell the creation of the Chemical Footprint Project in 2014, which is now setting the international standard for measuring chemical footprints and assessing the maturity of corporate chemical management programs.

He founded BizNGO in 2006, as a unique collaboration where business, environmental, and government leaders work together in creating solutions to the vexing challenges of chemicals management, including addressing environmental injustices, reducing chemical footprints, and scaling safer solutions. Through BizNGO, and in collaboration with Ann Blake, Mark co-created the Plastics Scorecard, a framework for scoring plastics based on the inherent toxicity of chemicals.

With Richard Liroff, co-founder of the Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN), he led the integration of IEHN into CPA in 2018. Today IEHN is a leadership community of investors focused on reducing the financial risks of chemical pollution and advancing the economic value of green chemistry and is led by CPA’s Alexandra McPherson.

Under Mark’s leadership, CPA has been at the forefront of creating effective tools and collaborations for embedding chemical hazard assessment into decision making across value chains. Our tools demonstrate Mark’s ability to translate complex information into innovative, usable, replicable, and scalable frameworks. He is a leader with the unique ability to bring together diverse groups and achieve innovative outcomes.

We are excited for Mark and where his next endeavors take him. We also look forward to new leadership for the organization and to working with Mark and the staff on this transition.

Clean Production Action seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and collaborative Executive Director to lead the organization through its third decade. We seek an individual who has the skills and experience to globally scale the dissemination and adoption of our tools and collaborations.
