GreenScreen List Translator™
A List-Based Hazard Screening Approach
The GreenScreen List Translator™ provides a “list of lists” approach to quickly identify chemicals of high concern. It does this by scoring chemicals based on information from over 40 hazard lists developed by authoritative scientific bodies convened by international, national and state governmental agencies, intergovernmental agencies and NGOs. These GreenScreen Specified Lists include REACH categorizations and chemical hazard classifications by countries using the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Each of the GreenScreen Specified Lists is mapped to hazard endpoints and a hazard level or range based on the GreenScreen Hazard Criteria.
Similar to a full GreenScreen assessment, the hazard classifications for endpoints are then used to derive a GreenScreen List Translator score. The List Translator scoring criteria align with the GreenScreen Benchmark-1 criteria.
A List Translator score of “LT-1” means the hazard classifications for a given chemical meet one or more of the GreenScreen Benchmark-1 criteria and this information is based on authoritative lists; if a full GreenScreen assessment were conducted, the chemical would most likely be a Benchmark-1 chemical. A List Translator score of “LT-P1” means the hazard classifications for a given chemical meet one or more of the GreenScreen Benchmark-1 criteria, but the information is based on screening lists and/or there is some uncertainty about the classification for key endpoints. Further research is needed on the flagged endpoint(s) to determine if the chemical is indeed a GreenScreen Benchmark-1. A List Translator score of “LT-UNK” indicates that although the chemical was present on a list, there is insufficient information to apply the scoring algorithm to the chemical.
Although the lists provide some information as to potential hazards associated with the chemical, a full GreenScreen assessment is needed to determine a GreenScreen Benchmark score. While authoritative lists are likely to generate definitive Benchmark Scores, results from a full GreenScreen assessment always take precedence over results from GreenScreen List Translator. If the chemical of interest is not found on any of the GreenScreen Specified Lists, the chemical does not receive a List Translator score.

Licensed GreenScreen List Translator™ Automators
Although one could derive a GreenScreen List Translator score manually, searching for chemicals and their associated hazard classifications across many lists can be time-intensive. Clean Production Action therefore partners with organizations who provide automation of the GreenScreen List Translator. Such tools allow users to search on chemical names and/or Chemical Abstract Service Registry Numbers (CASRNs) to quickly find hazard list information and GreenScreen List Translator scores. Use of an automated version of GreenScreen List Translator provides a useful first step in assessing whether a product contains chemicals of high concern for human health or the environment.
The Healthy Building Network
The Healthy Building Network has automated the GreenScreen List Translator in the Pharos Chemical & Material Library. Within the Chemical & Material Library, a user can search on a chemical name or CASRN to obtain a list of all the GreenScreen Specified Lists on which the chemical is present. The information is listed by hazard endpoints, and the hazard classification level (or range) assigned for each hazard endpoint based on the GreenScreen List Translator is provided. One can also view the GreenScreen List Translator score. Pharos also contains resources to evaluate the health and environmental impact of building materials.

toxnot.com is a chemicals management and hazard assessment platform which has incorporated GreenScreen List Translator as part of its suite of tools. The toxnot.com on-line platform allows brands, customers and suppliers to collaborate on chemicals transparency both through an open exchange of data and by pooled funding of chemical hazard assessments. toxnot also provides a robust commercial toolset that allows companies to apply chemicals hazard assessment in their products and chemical inventories as well as providing support for reporting and compliance initiatives. In addition to implementing GreenScreen List Translator, the platform provides a space for pooled funding of GreenScreen Assessments.
Licensed GreenScreen Profilers can also be engaged to support companies in evaluating chemicals, materials and products using the GreenScreen List Translator.
