A global leader in chemical hazard assessment

Clean Production Action launched GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals in 2007 as a comprehensive hazard assessment tool that is fully transparent, scientifically based and promotes the design and use of safer chemicals via informed substitution. At its core, GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals translates the toxicity principles of green chemistry into a method for identifying and taking pragmatic action away from chemicals of high concern to safer alternatives.
The first application of the GreenScreen method was to evaluate flame retardants in TV enclosures, because at that time the European Union was set to restrict decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDe) in electronics, causing businesses and governments to ask if alternative flame retardants were safer than decaBDe from the perspective of human and environmental health and safety. This inaugural 2007 report described the GreenScreen method and rationale for identifying an alternative that was comparatively safer than decaBDE. Since then, GreenScreen has become a global leader in chemical hazard assessment with widespread use by environmental groups, governments, businesses and standard setting bodies seeking to increase the availability of safer, healthier products.
GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals provides a:
- scientifically rigorous evaluation of a chemical’s intrinsic human health and environmental hazards
- easy to understand benchmark score
- clear way to communicate preferred chemicals with suppliers and within organizations
- fully transparent methodology
- simple results that can be used for chemical selection and avoid regrettable substitutions

GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals categorizes a chemical by assigning one of five benchmark scores. The Benchmark score is used to understand and communicate a chemical’s overall level of hazard.

GreenScreen List Translator™
Quickly Identify Chemicals of High Concern
GreenScreen List Translator™ (GS LT) is an automated list-based, abbreviated version of GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals. A GreenScreen List Translator assessment is a useful first screening step to identify chemicals of concern and prioritize action. The tool scores chemicals based on the probability that a chemical is a likely (GS LT-1) or
possible (GS LT-P1) GreenScreen Benchmark 1 chemical.
